These are beautiful. I still think my favorite characters of his are Reese and Hicks. I do not remember him being on Hill Street Blues. I wonder why he started doing so many evil characters. I've always wondered that.
Well he wasn't really evil in The Abyss - he was sick. He had high pressure neurological syndrome HPNS.
High-pressure neurological syndrome (HPNS) is a condition encountered in diving beyond a depth of 100 m. Manifestations include headache, tremor, myoclonus, neuropsychiatric disturbances and EEG changes.
HPNS caused psychological issues including problems with anger management. He had a psychotic break. The ones who were 'at fault' were his team. They should have seen the signs and got him medical attention.
High Altitude sickness is slightly different - it's physical, causing pulmonary edema or bleeding in the brain due to lack of oxygen, whereas HPNS is due to the pressure. If you think of how heavy a bucket of water is, then imagine a line of buckets from the top of your head to the surface!

I think most actors like the villains as they are usually more interesting :)

I remember seeing The Abyss the first time and being crushed that Michael Biehn was evil.

I should watch The Abyss again. I always thought he'd follow orders anyway in that one HPNS or not. I hope I'm wrong. I'd like him to be good.
